(pantothenic acid, pantothenate)

 

DRI (RDA or AI for Adults)

  • 5 mg. Pregnancy: 6 mg. Lactation: 7 mg.

Adult Maintenance - Therapeutic Range

  • 50 - 1,000 mg

Major Sources (6.0 mg to 0.8 mg per serving)

  • Turkey liver, chicken liver, beef liver, veal liver, sunflower seeds, lowfat yogurt, salmon, brewers yeast, turkey, chicken, pecans, peanuts, avocado, oysters, bass, beef heart, herring, mushrooms, milk, filberts, cashews. Possibly synthesized by intestinal bacteria.

Non-Therapeutic Importance

  • As part of coenzyme A and other derivatives, pantothenic acid participates in energy release from protein, carbohydrate, and fat; required in the biosynthesis of fatty acids.

Deficiency Symptoms

  • Epigastric distress with anorexia and constipation
  • Irritability
  • Numbness and tingling of hands and feet
  • Postural hypotension

Increased Risk for Deficiency

  • Alcoholism
  • Diabetes
  • Ulcerative or granulomatous colitis
