Selenium

 

DRI (RDA or AI for Adults)

  • 55 mcg. Pregnancy: 60 mcg. Lactation: 70 mcg.

Adult Maintenance - Therapeutic Range

  • 100 - 400 mcg

Major Sources (2,000 mcg to 20 mcg per serving)

  • Brazil nuts, oysters, chicken liver, clams, beef liver, sardines, pork, crab, salt water fish, whole wheat pasta, chicken meat dark, chicken meat light, turkey liver, lamb, sunflower seeds, plain bagel, oatmeal, soynuts.

Non-Therapeutic Importance

  • May be essential for tissue respiration; associated with fat metabolism, vitamin E, and antioxidant functions (part of glutathione peroxidase).

Deficiency Symptoms

  • Cardiac myopathy
  • Increased red blood cell fragility
  • Myalgia
  • Pancreatic degeneration

Increased Risk for Deficiency

  • Exclusive use of total parenteral nutrition (TPN) solutions
  • Semipurified medical diets: PKU
